Playback Volume

Overall, your playback volume should remain at a consistent level. There are times when you will have files that are quiet and the monitoring volume will need to be raised to enable you to listen for noise or other background elements. After listening at this level, it is a good practice to return the monitoring volume back to the original level. This helps train your ears to a certain average volume between the files.

Most professional studios monitor playback at an average volume of 80dB. You can properly calibrate your studio monitors by using a sound level meter that can be purchased at any electronics store, such as Radio Shack. Once your monitors are set up, use music CDs and movie DVDs to get used to the sound of your room. The more you understand how your monitors reproduce your sound, the easier it will be to work with them.

Be aware that prolonged exposure to high volumes can cause ear fatigue and ultimately ear damage.
